Ankle Sprains and Fractures

An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments in the ankle, usually on the outside of the ankle. Ligaments are bands of tissue--like rubber bands--that connect one bone to another and bind the joints together. In the ankle joint, ligaments provide stability by limiting side-to-side movement. However, not all ankle injuries are sprains; they can be fractures of bone, fractures of cartilage or even torn tendons or ligaments.

In children, ankle injuries can be growth plate injuries.  Ankle injuries often result from a fall, a sudden twist, or a blow that forces the ankle joint out of its normal position. Ankle sprains commonly occur while participating in sports, wearing inappropriate shoes, or walking or running on an uneven surface. The signs and symptoms of ankle sprains may include:  pain or soreness, swelling, bruising, difficulty walking, and stiffness in the joint.  All ankle injuries need professional attention. Most ankle injuries can be treated conservatively but sometimes surgery can be necessary, especially in bad fractures.  Neglecting them can lead to more serious problems.  These problems can be avoided by prompt diagnosis and treatment

 Ankle Sprain

DID YOU KNOW?

More than 25,000 people sprain their ankles every day, according to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

NOT TREATING AN ACUTE ANKLE SPRAIN

    CAN LEAD TO PROBLEMS

When one sprains his/her ankle, the ligaments stretch.  In fact, there are micro-tears of the ligament fibers.  If not treated immediately, scar tissue can form between these torn fibers.  This can lead to a very tight or conversely a very loose and painful ankle and makes it more difficult to treat.

For further information about ankle sprains or any other foot or ankle problem give us a call at the office and we will be glad to help you.  It is our aim to grant same day appointments so that we can get you "back on your feet" as soon as possible!

PATIENT SUCCESS STORIES
thank you
When I was referred to Dr. Nathan Penney in 2010, I had been through so much misery after being hit head-on by a drunk driver in 1996. The night of my car crash a decision was made to try to save my foot from amputation. This required an initial year of physical therapy and multiple surgeries before I could walk again without a walker or cane. I had some other followup surgeries but there came a time in 2007 when I could no longer deal with the daily pain and limping. I could not keep working like that so I opted for a total ankle replacement (the old kind, not the great new one Dr. Penney can do!)  That surgery failed miserably and I was limping worse than ever before. When I met Dr. Penney in 2010, I had been in an ankle brace since the 2007 ankle replacement and my right foot was 2 1/2 sizes bigger than my left. I have been buying 2 pairs of shoes in different sizes to deal with it.
Dr. Penney performed 2 surgeries in 2010. The first was a risky surgery to remove the ankle replacement and to fuse my foot. Dr. Penney prepared me for the worst but gave me hope for the best. The second surgery would correct an awful case of hammertoes and the usual dropped position of my midfoot. If he could not correct this, it would've been impossible to get a shoe on. As I write this today, I had my first pedicure since 2007. I am enjoying buying shoes in the same size and I am loosing the 60 pounds I had gained because I am becoming more active again and motivated to eat right. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Penney. He is the most attentive and carrying doctor! You could not ask for better!  He gave me my life back and a permanent solution. I was able to go back to work full-time for the first time since the accident in 1996. If you are lucky enough to have Dr. Penney as your doctor, you are truly blessed! And the office staff are so helpful in every way!
